maniaTV: Seth Godin's What every good marketer knows list

What Every Good Marketer Knows:

  • Anticipated, personal and relevant advertising always does better than unsolicited junk.
  • Making promises and keeping them is a great way to build a brand.
  • Your best customers are worth far more than your average customers.
  • Share of wallet is easier, more profitable and ultimately more effective a measure than share of market.
  • Marketing begins before the product is created.
  • Advertising is just a symptom, a tactic. Marketing is about far more than that.
  • Low price is a great way to sell a commodity. That’s not marketing, though, that’s efficiency.
  • Conversations among the members of your marketplace happen whether you like it or not. Good marketing encourages the right sort of conversations.
  • Products that are remarkable get talked about.
  • Marketing is the way your people answer the phone, the typesetting on your bills and your returns policy.
  • You can’t fool all the people, not even most of the time. And people, once unfooled, talk about the experience.
  • If you are marketing from a fairly static annual budget, you’re viewing marketing as an expense. Good marketers realize that it is an investment.
  • People don’t buy what they need. They buy what they want.
  • You’re not in charge. And your prospects don’t care about you.
  • What people want is the extra, the emotional bonus they get when they buy something they love.
  • Business to business marketing is just marketing to consumers who happen to have a corporation to pay for what they buy.
  • Traditional ways of interrupting consumers (TV ads, trade show booths, junk mail) are losing their cost-effectiveness. At the same time, new ways of spreading ideas (blogs, permission-based RSS information, consumer fan clubs) are quickly proving how well they work.
  • People all over the world, and of every income level, respond to marketing that promises and delivers basic human wants.
  • Good marketers tell a story.
  • People are selfish, lazy, uninformed and impatient. Start with that and you’ll be pleasantly surprised by what you find.
  • Marketing that works is marketing that people choose to notice.
  • Effective stories match the worldview of the people you are telling the story to.
  • Choose your customers. Fire the ones that hurt your ability to deliver the right story to the others.
  • A product for everyone rarely reaches much of anyone.
  • Living and breathing an authentic story is the best way to survive in an conversation-rich world.
  • Marketers are responsible for the side effects their products cause.
  • Reminding the consumer of a story they know and trust is a powerful shortcut.
  • Good marketers measure.
  • Marketing is not an emergency. It’s a planned, thoughtful exercise that started a long time ago and doesn’t end until you’re done.
  • One disappointed customer is worth ten delighted ones.
  • In the googleworld, the best in the world wins more often, and wins more.
  • Most marketers create good enough and then quit. Greatest beats good enough every time.
  • There are more rich people than ever before, and they demand to be treated differently.
  • Organizations that manage to deal directly with their end users have an asset for the future.
  • You can game the social media in the short run, but not for long.
  • You market when you hire and when you fire. You market when you call tech support and you market every time you send a memo.
  • Blogging makes you a better marketer because it teaches you humility in your writing.

maniaTV: Branded Entertainment is our Business...

But after logging time listening to pitches from NBC, ABC and The CW, Digitas EVP Carl Fremont came away with little to recommend for clients looking to advertise on the Web. "I was surprised there wasn't as much focus on digital as in the last two years," he says. "It feels like digital got the short-shrift."

The result, Fremont says, is the networks could be leaving money on the table. What's Fremont looking for? His advertisers want to integrate their wares into original Web shows, but he hasn't seen anything resembling a strategy from the networks. Fremont doesn't consider Hulu or other outlets that show digital streams of broadcast shows an option, because his advertisers want to integrate into shows rather than sponsor them or place 30-second spots.

"Just placing ads like pre-rolls are not a big interest to us, frankly," he says. "That's just taking the old TV model and adapting it to a new screen. We would rather work with a producer and develop custom content."

maniaTV: Dave Navarro

This week's show includes Celebrity Rehab's Shelly Sprague and Astrophysicist Beth Biller.

Dave and Todd sit down with Shelly to get a behind the scenes look into Celebrity Rehab's best kept secrets. The intimate conversation covers everything from what celebrities from the show are like during treatment and harsh behind the scenes drama of reality television. Shelly Sprague has led the kind of life that renders even a hit TV show merely a footnote. Although best-known as Celebrity Rehab's no-nonsense resident technician (and confiscator of cel phones and adult sundries), Shelly is herself a recovering alcoholic and addict whose life in sobriety is defined by her dedication to helping others avoid or escape the same plight. On and offscreen, she wins the respect of her patients by her sincerity and candor. Shelly has been there and done that: from mental health patient to mental health worker, plus everything in between; including exotic dancer, hairdresser, singer, teacher's aide, wife and mother.

maniaTV: Calvin Harris

I spent yesterday afternoon lounging at the pool at the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood with my new friend Calvin Harris. Well, ok, it was more like 20 minutes…..and I wasn’t “lounging” per se….more like planning the next stages of shooting….nonetheless, I got to hang out with Calvin Harris! First of all, he’s MUCH taller than I antipcated (6’3”? 6’4”?). Second, he’s from Glasgow so all I wanted to do was listen to him talk – who doesn’t love a Scottish accent! Third, he was hilarious! Calvin definitely knew how to wield that dry, British humor. We chatted about everything from his girlfriend (sorry ladies), golf in Scotland and who he was working with currently to his upcoming performance at Coachella. He was surprisingly laid back and very nice, considering he had just arrived in LA at 6AM that morning and had a performance that evening. I wouldn’t have had the same disposition on only a few hours sleep. Unfortunately, my time with Calvin was limited as we had to drop him off at sound check. Calvin, if you are reading this, don’t forget…you promised to teach us all a dance move the next time you were in town. We’ll hold you to that!

maniaTV: too cool Jane's Addiciton reuniting

We take all of the credit.  Jane's fans you're welcome!!!!!!  The NME awards tomorrow night should be interesting.  If these guys get through that performance then maybe, just maybe we'll get them in the studio for a session.

maniaTV: Del The Funky Homosapien

Mistadobalina Mr. Bob Dobalina…who doesn’t know Del The Funky Homosapien?

This week we had a great shoot with MANY artists. First up was Del, who not only performed in our studio but also taught our host, Samantha Maloney, how to play Contra on the XBOX. He and his crew were fun and were cool enough to come by before their USC performance with Lupe Fiasco. It was a great Saturday jam.

Sunday, the ethereal and incomprehensible Morcheeba performed. Ross Godfrey and French singer Manda floored our crew and producers with their hauntingly beautiful acoustic performance. “Enjoy the Ride” represents the philosophical direction of their album, Dive Deep, and their zen-like presence was wonderful for a Sunday afternoon performance. It was so quiet during their set you could hear a pin drop in the studio…..

Wednesday, we met up with Meiko, who just finished the Hotel Café tour. We had lunch with her at Charcoal and her warm, funny Southern disposition charmed us all. It’s fascinating to hear how she shot her own video in her room, released her own record and put her own song up on Itunes. That song became a #1 seller on Itunes and she has fast become “the one to watch.” It truly is the age of the artists again. She did make a nice observation about our production crew, saying, “you all seem like family – that must make working so much nicer” Thanks Meiko, we do love working together!

The Crystal Method on maniaTV's AllAccess

Scott Kirkland and Ken Jordan….known as The Crystal Method to their fans but to me, they were “Scott and Ken” after our shoot yesterday. Not only did I get to hear some of their new material (very top secret!) but I also got to see the creative process in effect, with Sam drumming live over their track. They couldn’t be more cool and laid back. My first conversation with Ken was about how his girlfriend’s cat attacked a lizard and left it’s tail on the ground by his pool – he actually showed me the tail. Awesome. My first interaction with Scott began by him telling me how he and Ken used to record all their material from a homemade converted garage studio. They only recently moved into the beautiful studio that we visited and it’s amazing to think how many platinum albums were created in a garage! I can’t talk about the music I heard too much but all I can say is that this next album is going to be KILLER.

maniaTV: Long Live TV

“Long live traditional television, thanks to Internet television – The global traditional television sector, despite the occasional shock, should remain in good health throughout the year, and there is a good chance that Internet television will have contributed to traditional television’s fortunes.” Deloitte Analyses top trends for technology, media and telecom industries for 2008

As consumption patterns change, networks and advertisers increasingly realize the power of internet TV to support their branding goals. The benefits Deloitte describes for the TV industry are not limited to that industry, as brands can now use cutting edge integration to ensure the content they sponsor has a shelf-life with global reach. Brand integration is a billboard that never gets ripped down on a road people will travel for years to come.

6 Things

  • 6 Things About User Gen Video
    1. User generated video is a public service not a business model.
    2. Dumpster diving for the "best" garbage is still dumpster diving for garbage.
    3. Advertisers do care about content they are associated with.
    4. People do prefer good over bad.
    5. There are, 1,312,901 loser gen videos of guys getting hit in the nuts.  That should be enough.
    6. Content is King is still true.
